Welcome to Mearns Kirk Parish Church
Whoever you are, whatever your age, background, or story, you are welcome here.
Mearns Kirk is an inclusive church rooted in the belief that God’s love is unconditional and for everyone. If you’re thinking of visiting, our 10.15am Sunday morning service is a great place to start. It’s our main weekly gathering and the best attended, offering a warm introduction to our worship and community life.
Why should I come to Mearns Kirk?
People come to church for many different reasons. Some are exploring a new church; others are stepping into church life for the very first time. Some have been Christians for decades, while others arrive with questions, doubts, or a simple curiosity about faith.
Whatever your story, whatever brings you through our doors, you are welcome to join us as we worship God together.
Church attendance offers more than just a place to worship. It’s a space to grow, connect, and find peace. Some of the many benefits include:
• A sense of community, acceptance, and belonging
• A chance to pause, reflect, and find calm amid busy modern life
• Opportunities to build self-esteem, support charitable causes, and live out positive values
• Making new friends and joining groups that enrich your life
Whether you’re seeking connection, purpose, or simply a moment of stillness, you’ll find a warm welcome at Mearns Kirk.
Where is Mearns Kirk, and how do I get there?
Mearns Kirk is in Newton Mearns, a suburb about seven miles southwest of Glasgow. (See Location Map)
If you’re not within walking distance, or prefer to come by car, then set your Sat Nav for: 404 Mearns Road, Newton Mearns G77 5BU.
The car park is accessed from Eaglesham Road, very near to the junction with Mearns Road. You will see our Church from this junction. The car park can get quite busy on a Sunday morning, however there is an overflow area on the grass, and you should be able to get parked no problem. Disabled parking is available, and the Kirk is wheelchair accessible.
If you find walking up the path from the car park to the front door a problem, we have a wheelchair in the church available to make your visit to church on a Sunday less of a challenge. If you want to use the wheelchair, let the church office know (0141 639 6555 or office@mearnskirk.com) and we will arrange a volunteer to push you up to the front door. Alternatively, you can ask the minibus driver to drive you up to the door.
What happens on arrival?
As you arrive at Mearns Kirk, you’ll be warmly welcomed at the entrance and given a copy of the order of service to guide you through the worship. All our songs are projected onto the screen to make it easy to follow along, but hymn books are also available if you prefer to use one.
What should I wear?
There’s no dress code at Mearns Kirk, just wear whatever you feel comfortable in. There’s no pressure to wear any particular type of clothing.
Where can I sit?
There are no reserved seats at Mearns Kirk—just choose any pew and make yourself at home. You’re welcome to chat with those around you; our congregation is friendly and always glad to greet new faces.
If you’d prefer a quiet moment to yourself, that’s absolutely fine too. There’s no pressure to talk.
What happens during a Sunday service?
Our Sunday morning service lasts about an hour and follows a simple, welcoming structure:
• We begin by standing as the Bible is carried to the pulpit
• You’ll be welcomed and led in prayer by our Minister
• We sing hymns together and hear readings from the Bible
• The Minister shares a sermon (a short talk) lasting around 20 minutes
• We say the Lord’s Prayer together—if you don’t know it, feel free to stay silent; no one will mind
• We stand to sing hymns and at one or two other moments—just follow those around you, or stay seated if you prefer
At the end of the service, we remain standing (if able) to sing a threefold Amen together.
Cafe Church
Several times a year, we gather in the halls for Café Church – a relaxed, interactive style of worship that brings us together around tables, conversation, and tea and coffee.
What about my children?
During our Sunday morning service, the Minister usually shares a short message for the children before they head off to the Church Hall for Sunday Club.
Visiting children are warmly invited to join in, or they’re welcome to stay with the adults for the rest of the service – whatever feels most comfortable for them and their family.
Please note that Sunday Club takes a break during certain times of the year, such as the school summer holidays.
Will I be asked for money?
No – there’s absolutely no obligation to give.
During our Sunday services, we do take up an offering to support God’s work in the world. Some people choose to give a monetary gift at that time, while many of our members now give by standing order instead.
Whatever you choose, there’s no pressure. If you do wish to contribute, your gift will be gratefully received and used to support meaningful work in our church and wider community.
Toilet
Need the loo? There is one toilet, which is disabled friendly, within the Church. It is located beside the vestry (through curtain on the left as you face the pulpit).
Is there anything else I should know?
Our Sunday services are recorded and shared on YouTube so that those unable to attend in person can still take part in worship.
If you’d prefer not to appear on camera, please speak to an Elder at the door. They’ll be happy to guide you to a seat that’s out of view, such as under the gallery near the entrance.
We look forward to warmly welcoming you to Mearns Kirk soon.
